Direct Multivariable Control for Modular Multilevel Converters

Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have enabled new and demanding applications for power electronics in the high voltage/high range. In these applications, very fast tight control of all variables MMC is prime importance. This article presents a multivariable (MVC) concept, which enables independent extremely essential variables. For each variable, tolerance band can be specified, strictly met even under unexpected severe transients disturbances. The minimized dead times achieved by are more than one order magnitude smaller state art. MVC has been implemented based on FPGA-hardware digital signal processing measured values. Experimental results performance robustness against parameter variation presented, using down scaled with 96 submodules. These include analysis steady-state operation, dynamic performance, fault scenarios.
